Who We ArePlease click on the photos for a larger pictureLanlas Farm is a 20 acre smallholding in the Upper Teifi Valley, two miles from the University town of Lampeter in West Wales.
We moved to Lanlas from Kent in 2001 to realise our dream of breeding free-range rare- breed pigs. Liney left her job behind to dedicate herself full-time to the farm, while Jo has stayed working for a Computer software company from home. Unfortunately within weeks of arriving at Lanlas, the country was struck down by Foot and Mouth Disease. Although this was a very difficult time, particularly for our farming neighbours, we were fortunate enough not to have bought any livestock and were not subject to the many restrictions which were placed on neighbouring farms at that time. It did mean that we had to put our dream of pigs running around the meadows on temporary hold.
In the meantime we acquired planning permission to convert a disused Victorian Coach House (last used as a cow shed!) into two self-catering holiday cottages. In 2002 we completed the conversion, achieved a 5 star grading from the Wales Tourist Board and opened to the public. With Foot and Mouth finally gone by 2002, we were at last able to buy our first pigs. Our first three piglets arrived in June 2002. Since then we have acquired many more pigs and are now breeding our own piglets from our Middle-White and Tamworth sows. See the Our Animals page for more pictures and information about our livestock. Since 2003 we have also been breeding dendrobaena worms, initially for composting waste but more recently we are increasingly supplying the fishing market as West Wales Worms
Where We AreAlthough Lanlas Holiday Cottages are in a very rural community, we are only 2 miles from the University town of Lampeter, itself a small market town. It is a University town and is well served with two supermarkets and lots of small local shops and several cafes and restaurants. The Lampeter Town Website has plenty of information on the town itself and is a good resource for visitors new to the area. The village of Llanddewi Brefi , made famous as the home of "The Only Gay in the Village", Dafydd Thomas and Trethowan's Gorwydd Caerphilly Award-winning Cheese, is a short drive to the north of, en route to the market town of Tregaron and its famous Talbot Hotel and Welsh Gold Centre. To the West is the beautiful Georgian town of Aberaeron. Many of its houses are listed and there are several excellent restaurants in and around the town. To the south are the pretty market towns of Llandeilo and LLandovery, on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park.
